WATCH: Westville naturalist strives to preserve the environment one cycad at a time

Naturalist Logan Govender is giving away more than 100 cycad trees to anyone who wishes to have them as an appeal to preserve the environment.

ACCORDING to the Westville resident, cycads are extremely valuable plants and retail for up to thousands of Rands. According to sources, three of South Africa’s cycad species are extinct in the wild, and half of the remaining species face extinction in the near future.

Govender said, “I am eco-conscious and a wildlife enthusiast. Therefore, I’m interested in anything regarding nature, ranging from the environment to the stars and the sky. Any naturalist would be concerned about the cycads going extinct. I am giving them away in hopes that people plant them and keep the species alive.”

Govender said that he had received his first cycad tree as a gift from his wife 22 years ago, and from there, his passion for cycads grew. He would often wait for cycad seeds to drop and replant them in his garden.

“Cycads are beautiful trees which take care of themselves; they require very little attention and can easily adapt to various different environments,” he added.

Govender said he has too many cycads in his possession, and this motivated him to give them away to people who would appreciate them just as much as he does.

For more information, or if you would like to take a cycad from his collection, contact Logan Govender on 083 228 6993.
