Upper Highway’s newly elected councillor gunned down

The ANC councillor, Minenhle Mkhize was killed outside his home in Cliffdale.

THE ward 103 ANC councilor, Minenhle Mkhize (39) died after he was shot several times outside his home in Cliffdale on Saturday night (January 22).

Mkhize was elected to run the ward during the Local Government Elections in November last year. He replaced an independent councillor.

The KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said it is alleged that Mkhize was in his car, and had just arrived home from playing soccer, when he was attacked.

Ward 103 covers KwaNyuswa, Cliffdale, Bucks Farm, Molokohlo, Drummond, Assagay, a section of Embo and Botha’s Hill.

“He was shot several times and died on scene. The vehicle was taken to the police pound for investigation,” she said.

Mbele added that seven empty cartridges were found at the scene.

The eThekwini Municipality’s speaker, councillor Thabani Nyawose, described the untimely death of Mkhize as a great loss to the city and to the community of Cliffdale.

“Being a councillor is now becoming a dangerous  job as they are constantly under siege. The municipality has lost one of its dedicated, young and hard-working councillors. His passing is a blow to the community of  ward 103,” he said.

On behalf of the people of eThekwini, Nyawose extended his sincere condolences to the Mkhize family, his organisation, the African National Congress, and the community of ward 103.
