Highway community rallies to save injured dog

The dog was admitted to the Kloof and Highway SPCA's clinic for observation.

PINETOWN resident, Andreas Mathios spotted an injured dog lying helplessly on the M19 after it was hit by a car.

When he noticed that the dog was still alive, he immediately stopped and rushed into traffic to stop oncoming vehicles from hurting the dog any further.

According Mathios, a truck driver immediately saw what was happening and slowed down to protect him and the dog.

Mathios was able to put a leash onto the injured dog and lift it to safety. He contacted the Marshall Security Here Buddy group for help and they called The Kloof and Highway SPCA, on his behalf, as he attended to the dog.

“A big thanks to that truck driver for positioning yourself to protect me. You were amazing. Another motorist, Ryan, Johanna Grunewald and two other ladies stopped to help. We sat with the injured dog,” he said.

According to Mathios, Ryan offered his emergency blanket for the dog. Andreas stayed with the pooch.

“Its eyes opened and it kept its eyes on me. The Kloof and Highway SPCA stopped off, accessed its injuries and raced the injured dog to their veterinarians, who were awaiting its arrival,” Mathaios said.

According to Barbara Patrick of The Kloof and Highway SPCA, the dog has been admitted to the SPCA’s clinic for observation.

“He is stable and will undergo x-rays tomorrow when he is in less pain,” she said.

Mathios posted this on his social media to highlight the good work the Kloof and Highway SPCA does.

“The Kloof and Highway SPCA needs our support. They are always available under trying situations to help animal rescuers with these emergencies. Dogs have no voice, but we, as people, will always be there for them,” said Mathios.
