Kloof SPCA field officer hijacked during evening call out

The Kloof and Highway SPCA's staff member was called out to collect a puppy that had been knocked over by a vehicle and was in need of medical treatment.

WHILE on a call out to pick up a puppy hit by a car, one of the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s field officer’s was hijacked at gunpoint on Tuesday evening.

According to the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Ferguson, a call was received from a woman in Intshelimnyama, just after 21:00 on Tuesday,  to say her puppy had been hit by a car and she was in need of help.

“We immediately responded and arrived at the property to collect the dog. While waiting for the owner of the dog, our field officer saw two men approach his vehicle,” said Ferguson.

At gunpoint, they demanded he unlock the doors of the vehicle. They climbed into the car, on either side of him, and drove off.

“Thankfully, they then dropped him off on the side of road with the cat and dog. He found someone’s phone and phoned me,” said Ferguson.

They drove off in the marked vehicle with the field officer’s cellphone, cash donations and the NPO’s equipment.

Even after the harrowing ordeal, the field officer ensured both animals were dropped off safely at the SPCA before he went home at about 01:00 the next morning.

The next day the canopy of the vehicle and equipment was located in Nazareth and last night, the car was found abandoned on the N2 in Port Shepstone.
