Homeless man values cleanliness

WISEMAN Davis may be homeless and dependent on the money he receives at the traffic lights in Pinetown but cleanliness is a priority to him.

Armed with his black refuse bag, Davis, who walks around with crutches, can be seen picking up litter in the vicinity of the traffic lights on Caversham Road.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, the 40-year-old said he hails from Hammarsdale and after he became homeless, he decided to move to the streets of Pinetown to try and earn a living.

“When I first came here, the first thing I noticed was litter strewn on the streets and I decided to do something. I might have few clothes but I try to stay clean,” he said.

Davis said his leg was amputated in hospital in 2014 after he was assaulted.

He said growing up, his dream was to become a traffic officer but his life did not pan out as he planned.

“My wish is to have a relationship with my children. They are now grown up and I wish to be a good father to them.”

With life being very lonely on the streets, his other wish is to get a job and a partner so that he can also have a family.

Although he has been in the area for only three months, he has made a good impression on the motorists who drive past daily.

“It is so touching to see someone in his condition cleaning the streets and he does it with a smile, I do not usually support beggars, but Davis is special and I bring him some food if there are leftovers,” said a motorist.
