Crime stats reveal increase in murder cases

Cele mentioned that the double-digit increase in most crime categories is attributed to the impact of the adjusted lockdown levels and distorted crime trends.

THE crime stats, which are being released today by Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, have shown an increase in murder cases across all nine provinces.

The quarterly crime statistics are reflecting on crimes that occurred from April 1 to the end of June 2021.

The stats have revealed a double-digit increase but the minister advised people to not panic as the stats are compared to last year’s lockdown which was not a normal period.

Cele said murder crimes increased by 66.2%, compared to 6.7% increase of the same period in 2019/2020.

“In the three months of reporting, a 66.2% increase in murder was recorded.

“However compared to the previous normal period of 2019/2020 financial year, the murder rate would have increased by 6.7%,” he said.

According to the minister, between April 2021 to end of June 2021, 5 760 people were killed in South Africa.

“This is 2 294 more people killed compared to the corresponding period in the previous financial year. Compared to a period without lockdown, it would result in an increase of 362 more deaths,” he said.
