Foreign objects major cause of sewer blockages – says City

The City said a large number of sewer blockage complaints they attend to are caused by rubble and foreign objects in the system.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has once again appealed to the public to refrain from dumping foreign objects into the system as this results in manhole blockages.

The plea comes after a story was published in last week’s edition of the Highway Mail where a resident complained about a manhole which overflows on regular basis in Link Road, Westville.

City spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said the Westville issue reiterates that the issue of blocking manholes continues to be a problem for the municipality, “this is despite the speed that the City moves with to attend to such blockages. The City does receive reports of manhole blockages from time to time and its responds to them but within a short space of time we find ourselves having to go back to square one.”

Mayisela said they also had a serious concern of residents who are invading land.

“The invaders later on connect illegally to the system, with material, which is not compatible with the system, causing it to malfunction. eThekwini will never derive any joy from subjecting its residents to manholes that are blocked.

“For us to be able to win the war against blocked manholes, we need to work together unceasingly by heeding all the calls made by the municipality to residents to refrain from dumping foreign objects into the system,” he said.
