Candidates prepare and perform a four piece continuous programme from the required syllabus with one of the four pieces being the candidates choice. The emphasis on this exam is performance so a well balanced and varied programme is key.

The 12-year-old, who brightens up the room with her big smile, said she feels proud of herself. “It is just so cool,” she said.

She said her grandparents inspired her to take piano lessons.

“It is an awesome instrument, probably my best instrument. I just love the sound of it,” said Angelica who added that she would also like to learn to play the guitar in the future.

Her goal is to be able to reach and be able to participate in the Grade 8 exams.

The multi-talented Angelica also loves dancing and does karate but admitted that soccer was her favourite sport.

She thanked her grandparents, parents and music teacher for supporting her.

Her music teacher, Jeanine Du Casse said this is a huge achievement considering the fact that she had to do online lessons for months due to lockdown restrictions.

“I am really proud to call her my student, she has worked hard and is a pleasure to teach,” she said.

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is the UK’s largest music education body and the world’s leading provider of music exams, holding more than 650 000 assessments in more than 90 countries every year.

ABRSM’s mission is to inspire achievement in music. Thousands of music students across South Africa enter with ABRSM each year and to be awarded a distinction of this level is a remarkable achievement.
