Kandasamys cast encourages unity and love through food hamper sponsorship

"There is no need for a challenge or anything of that sort. It should simply be just love, love and love. It is the only way to rebuild." - Jayan Moodley.

THE team behind The Kandasamys movie donated R100 000 towards food relief initiatives to alleviate the burden communities in KwaZulu-Natal are experiencing, due to unrest and looting which left millions of people hungry.

Keeping Up With The Kandasamys, Kandasamys: The Wedding and Trippin’ With The Kandasamys is the brainchild of Durban film maker and producer Jayan Moodley, and has gained popularity on screens not only locally but internationally too.

Speaking to Moodley, she said the idea stemmed as the cast had seen that food security was low and “when communities go through these most trying, difficult times, we have to help and be there for each other.”

“This has been such a rough period in our province’s history and over the next few weeks, as businesses rebuild, food shortage and food security are key. We thought that grocery hampers will help in some small way,” she said.

When Moodley pitched the initiative to her cast members, they were ecstatic to become involved and play their part.

“Maeshni Naicker’s (Shanti) response was  ‘this would make such a huge difference to help so many families’, and Jailoshini (Jennifer) Naidoo agreed, saying ‘that this is a wonderful and most heartwarming gesture’.”

“Each of the cast members and key production personnel are nominating organisations who they are either involved with or want to support.

“Between 12 and 15 organisations will benefit, depending on the scope of the project that is being handled and the amount set aside per organisation,” added Moodley.

She added that the cast is mainly KZN-based and they have all felt the trauma and emotional hardships of the past week.

When asked if she would challenge other film makers and casts to do the same, Moodley replied: “Right now, it is so difficult out there for every single person. We are all going through tough times. Each person is simply doing whatever they can to help. There is no need for a challenge or anything of that sort. It should simply be just love, love and love. It is the only way to rebuild.”
