WATCH: Major liquor distributor looted and torched in New Germany

A grocery store warehouse was also looted in New Germany.

FOR over 24 hours, crowds of people continued looting Distell, a liquor distribution company in New Germany.

The looting started early on Tuesday morning (July 13) and some parts of the building were also set alight.

Police tried to disperse the crowd on Tuesday with no success.

Highway Mail reporter, Sane Tsinde, who lives in the area confirmed on Wednesday that the looting was still ongoing on Wednesday afternoon. 

By 2pm on Wednesday she said looters were still carrying crates and pushing trolleys filled alcohol from the property. 

Traffic was affected in Otto Volek, Dinkelman Road and Josiah Gumede Road as the roads were occupied by cars and people with trolleys filled with crates of alcohol.

Distell is one of the major distributors and merchants of liquor such as wine, spirit, ciders and other beverages.

The Highway Mail has reached out to Distell for comment.
