Man nabbed for allegedly defrauding Escombe church of R1million

The 31-year-old man is expected to appear in court again on July 27 after allegedly defrauding a church in Escombe.

A 31-year-old man, who is believed to have defrauded the Dutch Reformed Church, in Escombe, of an estimated R1 million, is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on July 27.

According to KZN police spokesman, Capt Nqobile Gwala, it is alleged on January 12, 2017, at 10:00, the complainant received a call from a woman who stated she was based at Cape Town and was calling on behalf of a company.

“She stated that their company had received a financing request from a male who had used the complainant’s company letterhead to ask for bridging finance for a property transaction. The woman became suspicious as authentication could not be done on any of the numbers reflected on letterhead,” said Gwala.

Gwala added the complainant suspected the man had forged his signature since he did not know him.

The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court and the case was remanded to July 27.

“He was remanded in custody,” said Gwala.
