Kloof SPCA rescues rooster from death in long drop

It was reported the rooster had been stuck in the long drop for three weeks.

A TRAUMATISED rooster was rescued after it was reportedly trapped in a long drop in Dassenhoek for three weeks.

The animal welfare organisation’s received a plea from a concerned citizen: “Please help. There’s a leghorn chicken that was stuck in the home made toilet for about 3 weeks now and it doesn’t die. Can you please help? It’s very painful to look at every day.”

The NPO’s inspectorate department was alerted and inspector Petros Simamane made his way to the scene.

“We were horrified that many people were aware of this rooster that was clearly unable to get out of a long drop toilet and had been there for three weeks,” said Brigitte Ferguson.

“We had to stay positive, there was still hope.”

Inspector Petros Simamane found that while the ablution was almost full, there were cavities on each side that allowed the rooster to move from side to side.

Using a catch pole, he reached in and caught the rooster.

Simamane raced to rinse off the weak rooster before taking it back to the awaiting the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s clinic team.

The on-site veterinarian, nurses and clinic staff assessed the cold, tired and thin rooster before it was washed and blow dried.

“When he arrived at the clinic, we did not think he would survive. Once he had been given anti- biotics, he was given a nutritious bowl of food and we waited to see what he would do next and if he would stand. To everyones delight he started to eat and didn’t stop until his bowl of food was empty. He then started to cluck and never stopped,” said Ferguson.

An enclosure with a heating lamp and blanket was set up for the rooster.

The rooster has been named Long John Silver.
