2.55m Black Mamba retrieved from Queensburgh home

Two male Black Mambas were seen fighting for a female in a Queensburgh garden.

THE highly venomous mambas were out in full force across the greater Durban area recently and Highway’s snake catcher, Nick Evans, fielded calls for five Black Mamba sightings and one Green Mamba.

Evans said this was his favourite part about winter.

“Calls were far from wherever I was, and the snakes all disappeared quickly anyway. My Queensburgh friends, Colin and Wendy Jennings, had the sighting of the day,” he said.

The couple watched two Black Mambas fighting in their garden, behaviour the snake expert cited as typical at this time of year.

“The mambas took their fight down a bank and into the thick bush. I knew there was a good chance of at least one snake coming back into their garden, so I made my way there,” said Evans.

When he arrived at the property, he hoped one had returned but there had been no further sightings.

Just before he left the property, Evans took another look down the bank and, up against the wall, something caught his eye.

“Sure enough, a mamba had returned!” said an excited Evans.

As he made his way towards it, the 2.55m snake moved. To ensure it would not get away, Evans opted to run past the deadly reptile and cut off its exit while Warren Dick, another snake catcher, moved towards it.

“I managed to grab the tail and then got the tongs on the neck. It put up a bit of a struggle, but I soon had it pinned down,” said Evans.
