Radio motoring legend dies

Tributes have begun flowing in for KZN motoring stalwart, Julian Lurie (86) who died on Monday, 26 April.

The Durban North resident started motorsport reporting at Roy Hesketh circuit in 1964 for SABC and went on to become the official motorsport reporter for SABC Radio news for many decades.

Until recently Julian was the editor and presenter of Test Drive on Lotus FM and in 2015 he was acknowledged for his motoring news, shows and reports and was inducted into the South African Radio Awards Hall of Fame.

As the chairman of the KZN Region of Motorsport South Africa (MSA) for 25 years and a long-time member of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGM), Julian lived, ate and slept all things motoring.

He started circuit racing in 1954 and his racing career included rally driving from 1967 to 1973. In 1980 he was awarded KZN colours for rallying. In 2006 he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award and among many affiliations, was an honorary life member of the Natal Motorcycle and Car Club (NMCC) and a long standing member of the MG Car Club of KZN.

Julian leaves his wife of 61 years Marion, children Rael, Steven, Michelle and six grandchildren.
