Green Turtle shows positive signs of recovery at uShaka
After two weeks of care, the turtle now looks stronger and will continue to receive care from the rehabilitation team at uShaka.
AFTER nearly two weeks of care by the dedicated team at uShaka Sea World, the Green Turtle, nicknamed Gabby, is believed to be on the mend.
She was found stranded on a beach in La Mercy on 19 April. On arrival at uShaka, the turtle’s carapace was covered in barnacles.
“The fresh-water bath she was placed in shortly after arrival managed to rid her of most of the barnacles which were even in her nostrils and under her nails,” said the South African Association for Marine Biological Research’s (Saambr) Ann Kunz.

The turtle did not move much or even lift its head since its arrival but showed a positive turnaround in her condition last Monday.
“Although she spends most of her day resting, she is a lot more alert and is showing an interest in food with a preference for sea lettuce. We are still very guarded about her prognosis but these are all positive signs for recovery,” said Kunz.
