Overflowing Glen Park manhole causes a stink

The manhole on Cedar Road has been overflowing with oil and diesel for weeks.

A STRONG stench of diesel emanating from an unattended overflowing manhole on Cedar Road, Glen Park has become unbearable for residents.

The issue continues to become a health hazard despite residents having repeatedly reported the matter to the municipality with promises that the problem would be attended to, but no one has arrived to fix the issue.

Concerned resident, Sharman Collins, said she is at her wit’s end. “This is a health hazard as this manhole is not just overflowing with ordinary litter but there is also diesel and oil spilling from it.

According to Collins, the issue was first reported on 20 March.

“Since then, nothing has been done. I received a call from one of the plumbers who told me they were in Cedar Road, Durban and I informed them this Cedar Road is in Glen Park, Pinetown,” she said.

Collins said the second person who responded told her that they were in Westville and from that point, she hasn’t received any feedback.

“Our concern is that diesel and oil are flowing onto the road. One of these days, this will cause a serious accident. It’s going into the drains then straight into our rivers. We can not take the dogs out and children can no longer skate outside,” she said.

Another resident, Jimmy Pattinson said he has tried to clean up the mess himself.

“The problem is we do not even know where it is coming from. My son and I have tried to remove the spillage on the road and have poured sand on it, this is just dangerous. Who do need to report this matter to before it is sorted? Surely, this poses a great danger to the environment as well,” he said.

The Highway Mail had reached out the the eThekwini Municipality for comment, but no response was received at the time of publication.
