Mozambique Spitting Cobra caught slithering through Westville lounge

The snake is believed to have gone inside the house to find a cooler spot to hide after a hot day.

LOCAL snake expert, Nick Evans was called to a Westville North home to retrieve what was initially described as a thick, green snake.

Evans said the family were relaxing in their lounge after a hot day in Durban when one of the family members, now in the kitchen, spotted a snake exit the lounge and make a beeline for the front door.

Evans, with his wife, Joelle, in the passenger seat, made his way to the Westville home.

“We parked in front of the house and the snake was apparently just up the staircase, outside the front door. As I climbed up, I shone my JETBeam South Africa torch at the base of a pillar and saw orange and black colours underneath the snake’s neck. A spitter,” said Evans.

He rushed back to his vehicle to retrieve his visor.

“Wearing a visor to catch a cobra is challenging on warm, humid nights, as the visor mists up! This is obviously not something you want happening while trying to pin down a highly venomous snake,” said Evans.

He was able to catch the snake without being spat at. Evans noted the Mozambique Spitting Cobra was a little over 1m in length.
