Flock to Woza Moya’s bird exhibition

The fabulous pieces, that are intricately detailed, are sure to have your heart soaring.

WOZA Moya’s talented artists have uncaged their creativity for the latest exhibition at its on-site gallery, which will run until Saturday, 17 April.

“This is an exhibition where we have worked with crafters to develop products around our local indigenous birds, from Guinea fowl, Mynah birds (a non-indigenous bird we all love to hate), Hornbills, Sandpipers, Red Bishops, Wood hoopoes, Crows and Weavers. We also have a beautiful array of chickens, roosters and egg baskets to coincide with Easter,” said Woza Moya’s executive manager, Paula Thomson.

Even though many of the pieces of art were meant to be kept as a surprise for the recent launch, a few of the items were ordered and sent overseas and across South Africa.

“They were just too beautiful to keep hidden for a month while we built up stock. This has ensured a steady stream of work for crafters, which was the whole aim of this project,” said Thomson.

Expect to find unique wooden sculptures of birds and humans by artists Sibusiso Maphumulo and Josephat Phiri. Modern bird paintings by Tania Kuhl, a local artist, will be on display. She worked in digital design for many years before she found her way back to her passion for painting during the hard lockdown in 2020.

“Her paintings are a reflection of her love for nature, colour, and texture. The paintings are a great fusion of digital design and fine art and will make a great gift for a bird lover, or will be beautiful in any home!” she said.

Three award-winning embroidery paintings by Irena Skibinski, an ex Woza Moya volunteer, will also be on exhibit.

“We would like to thank the National Arts Council for sponsoring this exhibition and helping us develop a basket of new products with crafters that will ensure they continue to earn an income over this difficult period,” said Thomson.
