Westville’s Juan swims an extra mile

Juan Nel (11) won the aQuellé Midmar Mile U13 category.

ELEVEN-year-old, Juan Nel won the Boys 13 years and under category at this year’s aQuellé Midmar Mile in an impressive time of 21 minutes and 57 seconds.

The confident young man has been training at the Westville Swimming Club since he was six years old.

The Grade 6 learner who swam the Midmar Mile race for the first time said it was challenging but very rewarding. He will swim this age group for two more years.

“The race was supposed to be 1.6km but due to the weather, I think it was a bit longer, about 1,7km,” he said.

The champ is all set to compete in the SA Junior National Championship this weekend at Kings Park swimming Pool in the 12 years and under age group.

“I enjoy swimming, I love the feel of the water. I train hard, six times a week which is the reason I have won so many races,” said Juan. His mother, Petro, who is also his coach also won the Midmar Mile in 1984,1985 and 1986.
