Bargains galore at HACT’s White Elephant

There are hundreds of items adorning the many shelves of the non-profit organisation's refurbished White Elephant shop.

THE White Elephant charity shop at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) is commonly known to hold many treasures and, with its recent renovation and upgrade, now has a vast trove of fantastic second-hand goodies.

Woza Moya’s executive manager, Paula Thomson said a constant flow of donations are received from the generous surrounding community which ensures the shop is constantly refreshed with new items.

“The history behind the phrase White Elephant originated in Siam, now known as Thailand. When a very pale or white elephant was discovered, it immediately became the possession of the king. Even though the large mammal is considered to be both sacred and valuable, if the king gifted you one it was also considered to be the worst thing to happen. This was simply because of the high maintenance costs involved,” said the shop’s manager, Lovell Southey.

The shop, where it was previously located at the centre, was bursting at the seams and goods were flowing out onto the veranda. Still based at 26 Old Main Road in Hillcrest, the store is nearer the Woza Moya store and tea garden.

Two old storage containers, that were already at the centre, were bricked together by HACT’s talented on-site team and, with Lovelle’s magic touch, it was recently opened to the public. The shop is open from 8.30am till 1pm from Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 2pm on Saturdays.

There is strict control over the number of shoppers inside the shop. All Covid-19 protocols are adhered to.
