Black Mamba caught near Westville complex

Before the 2m reptile was able to reach the canopy of the tree, Nick Evans was able to catch and secure it.

HIGHWAY’s snake expert, Nick Evans was called to retrieve a Black Mamba after it was seen slithering into a garden in a Westville complex recently.

He noted the garden the snake disappeared into was completely surrounded by homes and, for the safety of the snake, the residents nearby and their pets, it needed to be caught and relocated.

“The garden had a few tall trees, a dense shrub, and some spikey plants. I feared it had gone up the tree, sneakily, without anyone seeing. I scanned around and, out of the corner of my eye, I saw some movement on the tree,” said Evans.

The mamba was slithering up the tree and, before it was out of his reach, he reached up with his tongs and grabbed hold of the snake.

“If it got to the canopy, I don’t know what I would have done,” said a grateful Evans.

Before he lowered and pinned the snake to the ground, he turned to ensure there was no one behind him – a move he reiterated was a good thing as there was someone standing behind him.

The snake, once safely secure in his hands, was measured to be about 2m long.
