WATCH: New Year’s Eve storm wreaks havoc across Highway area

A single lane has been opened along Stapleton Road to allow traffic to flow.

WHILE many people across the country were celebrating the end of 2020 and the start of the new year, a storm wreaked havoc in the greater Durban area.

Andreas Mathios of ProAct Neighbourhood Watch noted that emergency services and the City’s disaster management were inundated with calls and requests to clear roads and fallen trees in various parts of Durban, including the Pinetown and Upper Highway areas.

“We are urging the community and the neighbourhood watch networks to please liaise with their duty officers at each and every neighbourhood watch and get them out to assist you if you do have a life-threatening emergency. Where trees are obstructing your driveway, and you need to get out, get your neighbourhood watch to come and assist you,” he said.

He said members of the City’s electricity department are also assisting with clearing the debris.

“They are going over and above the call of duty to help clear roads and ensure they are accessible for emergency services,” said Mathios.

In a video clip sent to the Highway Mail by Mathios, a section along Stapleton Road is covered in debris and a single lane has been created for traffic flow.

Neighbourhood watch members and City workers have joined forces to help clear debris blocking roads and driveways.
