Kearsney learner receives major theatre scholarship

The talented teenage said he has undergone a cultural journey through theatre and looks forward to what the future holds.

TALENTED 18-year-old William Young from Kearsney College was named the “perfect fit” for a four-year scholarship to one of the country’s most respected theatre colleges.

Delia Sainsbury, the founder of the Waterfront Theatre School in Cape Town, said Young was the ideal individual to embrace and develop from their “triple threat” of song, dance and acting.

The talented multidisciplinary performer is a leader of the Kearsney choir, which recently recorded Aloe Blacc’s ‘The World is Ours’. Performed observing Covid-19 protocols, mainly outside with the boys wearing visors, it had 2 400 Facebook and 4 800 Instagram views within a few days.

Young’s love of performing, particularly theatre, started from an early age, when he watched Kickstart’s extraordinary pantomimes with his family. He desperately wanted to be on the stage instead of in the audience.

Being part of Kearsney’s award-winning choir allowed him to perform on world stages, while also highlighting the discipline, dedication and passion required to perform at that level.

“I’ve gone through a ‘cultural journey’, starting with piano, then violin, to acting and finally singing. I’ve found my strengths and weaknesses in performing, as well as a realisation of the depth of my love and passion for culture,” he said.

Diplomas from the multi-faceted course, which his valued at R400 000, are endorsed by the acclaimed Trinity College and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing in London, thereby opening doors to global stages.
