UPDATE: Provincial Taxi Task Team investigates M7 shooting

The shooting claimed the life of one man and left another seriously injured.

POLICE from the KwaZulu-Natal SAPS media centre have confirmed the Provincial Taxi Task Team is now investigating the fatal shooting which took place on the M7 a month ago. 

A passenger was also injured in the shooting which took place on the afternoon of Sunday, 18 October.

At the time, Blue security’s spokesperson and community videographer, Andreas Mathios, shared this video.

While Malvern SAPS detectives continue to investigate charges of murder and attempted murder following the shooting, Col Thembeka Mbele, of the KwaZulu-Natal SAPS media centre confirmed on Thursday, 19 Novemberthat the ongoing investigation had been taken over by the provincial task team into taxi related crimes.

“It is  alleged on 18 October at 1.35pm, on the M7 westbound, 35-year-old Thobani Gwala was fatally shot by unknown suspects,” said Mbele. 

Injuries

“The passenger sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital for medical attention,” added Mbele.

“The docket was transferred to the Provincial Taxi Task Team,” said Mbele.

Rowan Scandroglio said at the time of the incident that Rescue Care paramedics along with those from Redline Response had arrived on the scene to find an overturned vehicle down an embankment.

“One male, believed to be in his 30s, sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing more paramedics could do for him. He was declared dead on scene. Another male, believed to be in his 40s, was found down the embankment in a serious condition,” said Scandroglio.

Following the shooting Netcare 911 and the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit set up a specialised rope system to hoist the man up the embankment to the roadside.
