Veterans honour fallen comrades at Pinetown’s Wayside cross

This year the Wayside cross had to be slightly smaller than normal because of Covid-19 and rain forcing the main part indoors.

THE Wayside Cross yearly remembrance ceremony was held on Sunday, 1 November, to honour the fallen comrades from various conflicts.

This includes those who are MOTHs (Memorable Order of Tin Hats) as well as who lost their life providing emergency service during a natural disasters or fighting crime.

The event usually attracts crowds but due to Covid-19 this year a scaled down event was held which was moved to Pinetown’s Better Ole Shellhole on Underwood Road.

A small gathering at the Wayside Cross Pinetown Library Gardens laid wreaths while Quintin Sinclair and Stacy Grundy pipers from the Natal Mounted Rifles (NMR) played bagpipes.

Those in attendance then moved to the MOTH hall in Underwood Road where a social distanced gathering, with space between the seats, and limited numbers as well as covid tracking information being taken upon entry, took place.

All the formalities which usually take place at the Wayside Cross ceremony took place at the hall.
