VIDEO: Home needed for dog found dodging cars on M19

The one-year-old Germany Shepherd was found dodging cars on the busy M19.

STRAY Paws, a registered animal rescue organisation for homeless, stray, injured and abandoned dogs and cats, is looking for a warm home for a mother hound and her 11 puppies.

The puppies’ mother, Demi, a-one-year old German Shepherd was found by Stray Paws director, Shabnam Baran dodging cars on the busy M19 on Wednesday, 21 October.

“I was driving to Westville when I saw her, I reversed as I feared she might be run over on the road and get killed,” said Baran.

Lucky for Baran, Demi was friendly and came to her easily.

“I noticed she had puppies about three weeks ago. She did not look like an agitated new mum,” she said.

The animal lover searched the nearby bank for puppies but none were found.

“I put her into the car and drove to Dunstaple Crescent in Reservoir Hills in search of the temple I saw on the top of the hill where the dog was found.

“We walked around asking people if they recognised the dog. No one seemed to know where she came from,” explained Baran.

Not knowing what to do now, the puzzled Baran then called Ashburne Veterinary Clinic and asked them if they would keep her until they locate her family.

After two days of frantically searching for her puppies, Baran and her team were finally directed to where they were.

Demi and her puppies are homeless:

Demi and her 11 puppies are now in need of an urgent foster for about five days.

“Their foster home failed the home check because the yard was not secure. The yard is being secured and we will do another home check on Tuesday next week,” said Baran.

The puppies are four weeks old and are eating soft puppy food. No bottle feeding required.

“Demi has a beautiful nature. She is loving and a fantastic mom. She managed to take care of 11 puppies who are healthy. Her milk has dried up and she’s unable to feed them anymore,” said Baran.

Strict home checks will be carried out.

Adoption fees apply which covers mom’s sterilisation, mom’s vaccinations and deworming, puppies’ vaccinations and deworming.

Yards must be well secured.

“We strive to ensure that no animal endures the pain and suffering of a life of abandonment and neglect,” said Baran.

Through Baran’s Facebook page, Shabnam Baran Stray Paws she wishes to work together with other animal organisation to eliminate the suffering of dogs and cats in and around the Durban area.

“No community work can be successful without the support from the public. We look forward to the support in the form of food for the dogs, medical supplies, blankets, toys, feeding dishes, kennels and of course your volunteering assistance to take care of the animals,” she said.

Anyone who wishes to adopt Demi or her puppies or assist the organisation can contact Shabnam Baran on 067 698 9876.
