Thomas More College matrics bid school fond farewell

The Grade 8 learners at Thomas More College recently set up tower gardens at school.

THOMAS More College’s matric class of 2020 recently celebrated their last official day of school.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions placed on schools, the school body thought outside the box and added a little something extra for the learners.

The 108 matriculants arrived on the lawns of the Great House to receive their traditional biodegradable helium balloon and enjoy photo opportunities with teachers and peers.

The Matric Class of 2020 then made their way from the lawns over to the bronze bust of Sir Thomas More, where many gave him a jovial pat on the back or a fist bump as they bid farewell to their school.

They then made their way to the school bell, which is only rung twice in a life time – once when completing the traditional 80km Long Walk and on completion of their matric year.

A guard of honour was formed by the high school educators that lead to the Peter Habberton Hall for their matric valedictory service and award ceremony.

Parents and learners were able to watch the proceedings via live-stream from home.

Once the formal service concluded, the matrics enjoyed their fun awards ceremony before they were, for the first time, given access to the iKhwezi Sports Centre.

A 10m x 3m wall that displays the face of each matric pupil from the class of 2020 was then revealed.

The building was filled with sounds of awe and amazement and there were few dry eyes.
