Spitting cobra rescued in Hillary

According to Nick Evans, a local snake expert, a spitting cobra will only spit in self defense.

NICK Evans, a local snake catcher, said his cobra drought came to an end when he caught a spitting cobra in Hillary yesterday.

He received a call from a Hillary resident to say there was a large Mozambique spitting cobra near his pool.

The resident said a few of his dogs had red eyes and Evans believes this was due to the cobra spitting at them.

“I hurried over, as he was keen to get to the vet,” said Evans.

“I arrived and was directed to where the snake was hiding. I put my visor on, my GoPro on my head and, as I did that, the homeowner shouted, ‘Nick, it’s there!’ “

The cobra emerged from a nearby shrub and was moving along the paving.

Evans ran up to it and, as he made a move to grab it, it spat at him.

“Although, not very well. I suspect it had been spitting a lot at the dogs,” he said.

Evans pinned down the snake and caught it.

The female Mozambique spitting cobra is about 1.5m and he believes it may be pregnant.

“The dogs have been treated and will be fine. The homeowner had a positive attitude towards snakes, he didn’t want it killed, nor did he resent it for spitting in the dogs eyes. He understood,” said Evans.

He noted that spitting cobras are the masters of self defense and do not spit to attack.
