Rossburgh licence centre remains open on weekends during October

Avoid the long queues to renew your licence by doing it over the weekend, says the station commander of Rossburgh's testing centre.

STATION commander at Rossburgh testing centre, Chief Provincial Inspector, Lorraine Nigidi, confirmed the centre is open on Saturdays and Sundays and noted that only a few people are using the extended hours to renew their licences.

“We are still open on weekends,” said Ngidi recently, adding that she wishes people would use the facility on weekends.

“There are long queues during the week, but sometimes it is quite clear on the weekends,” she said.

The testing centre had to be closed on multiple occasions over the past few months, first after a staffer tested positive for Covid-19 and after a broken pipe on Titren Road left the facility with no water.

However, once it was back in operation, the centre along with other similar facilities began to open on weekends to cut through the backlog.

Amendments to the regulations gazetted on Wednesday, 22 July included an extension of the validity of driver’s licences to the end of January.

However, this extension only applies to learners licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits that expired from 26 March up to 31 Aug 2020.

Extensions

There were also some extensions to the validity of licence disks for vehicles which were due to expire during lockdown, however the period for those has since passed.

“All motor vehicle licence discs, temporary permits and roadworthy certificates that expired during the period that commenced from 26 March 2020 up to and including 31 May 2020 are deemed to be valid and their validity period is extended for a further grace period ending on 31 August 2020,” states the regulations.

“It must be taken into account that no further extension will be granted and those who fail to renew on time will have to pay applicable penalties or face the necessary repercussion for late renewal,” said the Department of Transport in a statement.
