Man charged with Leighton Agg’s murder appears in court

A man, who was arrested after the body of Leighton Agg was found under a bridge near Pietermaritzburg, has appeared in court.

THE Westville man who was arrested in connection to the murder of Hillcrest resident, Leighton Agg, appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday. 

The man, believed to be a contractor, reportedly appeared in court facing a charge of murder as well as additional charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and housebreaking.

He was reportedly remanded in police custody and the matter was postponed until Wednesday, 14 October, for further investigation.

The discovery of Agg’s body resulted in a case of murder being registered and investigated at Hillcrest SAPS on Thursday. This followed the arrest of one person after Agg’s body was recovered on Wednesday night.

According to KZN Media Centre spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele, police officers from the Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue unit were among those involved in the search for Agg.

Agg, who had been reported missing a week before his body was found by specialised search and rescue police, along with local police and a private security company, was last seen in Winston Park.

According to reports, Agg went to Hillcrest for an appointment on 30 September and was last seen driving his white Bantam bakkie in Winston Park at 5.44pm.

The investigation continues.
