Motorists are revved up for M19 road revamp

The Ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth said the 5km stretch of road was in desperate need of a revamp.

MOTORISTS who make use of the M19, between the M13 and the Dunkeld/Rodger Sishi offramp, can breathe a sigh of relief as the 5kim stretch of road will receive a revamp.

Cllr Melanie Brauteseth said the revamp was announced after months of sustained pressure placed on the Department of Transport.

“This section of road has been in a dire condition for the past few years due to the massive amount of traffic it carries, much of which is heavy duty vehicles. Numerous requests to have the road repaired unfortunately fell on deaf ears. Councillor Riona Gokool and I then escalated the issue to our colleague, Sharon Hoosen, in the provincial legislature who, in turn, exerted pressure on the MEC for Transport,” said Brauteseth.

A contract was then awarded by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and work on the road is set to begin in October 2020 and should conclude in early 2021.

The contract entails the resurfacing of the entire stretch of road.

She noted that both herself and her colleagues will monitor the roadworks and ensure that the work being done is of good quality, that the project is completed within budget and on time.

“We will also keep up the pressure to revamp other sections of the Highway area, such as the M5 section of Stapleton and Otto Volek Road,” added Brauteseth.

Brauteseth explained that while the news of the revamp was welcomed, she urged motorists to approach the area with caution and patience while the roadworks were ongoing.
