Kearsney College’s Massimo heads to Italy
The talented teen hopes to make waves when he joins his 36 rugga teammates in Italy once he completes matric.
KEARSNEY College’s rugby 1st team eighth-man, Massimo Fierro has been contracted to the Italian Academy when he finishes writing matric at the end of this year.
The Academy, based in Calvisano in Brescia, comprises a group of 36 selected young players who live and train together until they turn 21. Once they become seniors, they are contracted to one of Italy’s professional clubs, Benetton or Zebra.
He said the Covid pandemic has had a massive impact on his game, allowing him to only have played three warm-up games and one match for Kearsney’s ‘One-Stripe’ 1st team this season.

Fierro said being Italian, he was contacted by the Italian Rugby Federation.
“They had heard I made the Sharks Craven Week side and viewed my recorded games and my highlight package. They seemed to be happy with what they saw and then offered me a contract from January next year,” he said. “There is no definite contract period, but they seem to have a four-year plan for me, after which I hope to play in the senior Italian national side.”
Fierro finished writing his matric trials last week, and is now concentrating on his final year-end Independent Education Board examinations before he can focus on the exciting prospect of playing rugby in Italy.
