Pinetown centenarian still going strong

Patterson grew up in Durban and enjoyed swimming in the harbour and camping.

BEING surrounded by a loving family is the one thing that has kept Bill Patterson going strong.

Patterson turned 100 on Monday, 7 September 2020.

At 100 years, Patterson is still healthy.

“I feel fine, I am with my children so I got to be well,” he said.

Patterson grew up in Durban and said while growing up he enjoyed swimming in the harbour and camping, his other hobbies included fishing but he said that caravanning was his favourite thing to do.

Patterson also served the country in the Second World War and has been the member of the M.O.T.H organisation.

Patterson also worked as a master builder in the Pinetown area for many years. He was married to Clytie in 1946 after love at first sight on vacation in Tweedie.

Together they had three children.

After Clytie’s passing, he married Julie Beer in 1985.

He now has 11 grandchildren, and 21 great grand children.

Patterson lived independently in Fairydene Retirement Village until the Covid-19 pandemic, at which stage he moved in with his daughter in Cowies Hill, Pinetown.

His son in England and daughter in Canada who wanted to spend the day with their father unfortunately could not be present due to lockdown regulations.

His daughter, Phyl Hawker said her dad is a positive person who always looks on the bright side. This attitude has stood him good stead over the years.
