Suspect killed, two police injured during Dassenhoek shootout
The suspect was hiding in a tunnel at the Dassenhoek Railway Station after robbing three men of their cellphones.

TWO police officers from the Shongweni and Durban K9 Unit were shot while responding to a crime scene at the Dassenhoek Railway Station.
According to KZN police spokesperson, Capt Thembeka Mbele, it is alleged that on Monday, 7 September, an armed man robbed three men of their cellphones and a wristwatch.
“One of the victims who resisted was shot, the gunman then ran into the tunnel where he hid,” said Mbele.

Mbele said police were alerted and as they approached the suspect, he opened fire at them.
“The suspect was fatally wounded and two police officers were injured during the shootout. The stolen items as well as the suspect’s firearm were recovered at the scene.”
The injured police officers were taken to hospital.
“KwaNdengezi police are investigating charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition,” added Mbele.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the police officers for protecting themselves when they came under fire.
“Our police officers will not be threatened or deterred by criminals while executing their constitutional mandate and they will protect themselves when their lives are threatened,” he said.
