WATCH: EFF members protest outside Westville Clicks

According to Westville Mall, the peaceful protest was short-lived and SAPS and a private security company were on site prior to the group's arrival.

CLICKS stores across the country have come to a standstill after the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, called on the party’s members to close all 880 of the chain’s stores.

The EFF made the call after a racially insensitive advert was posted on the Clicks website last week.

The advert showed a black female model with an Afro labelled as ‘dry and damaged’ alongside a white female model with blonde straight hair labelled as ‘fine and flat’.

In the EFF’s statement it said, “We, therefore, call on all Clicks branches to close and must only open on Saturday, 22 September. This is because we are of the view that they are not genuine with their apology and the only way to make capitalists apologise and feel genuine remorse is for them to lose money.”

It also noted that if Clicks did not close its doors, the party’s members would shut down all 880 outlets across the country from Monday, 7 September to Friday, 11 September.

The EFF members seen at the local mall posted signs near the store’s entrance. One read: “Clicks must respect Afrikans in Afrika!! #BlacklivesMatters #ClicksIsASellouts”

Westville Mall said, “We can confirm the EFF visited our property at 12.30pm, 7 September 2020. Our security company, Imvula Security, along with SAPS were already on site and handled the situation peacefully. The Clicks Westville store was closed for trade when the EFF visited and their members left site after approximately 30 minutes.”

The Highway Mail has reached out to Clicks, but no response has been received. Updates to follow.
