UKZN and DUT listed in SA’s top 5 universities

The University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Durban University of Technology both featured in the top 500 universities in the world and top five in South Africa.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Durban University of Technology both made the cut into the top 500 universities in the world according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University rankings for 2020.

The 2020 list includes almost 1,400 universities across 92 countries, standing as the largest and most diverse university rankings ever to date.

The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The only university ranking to be independently audited by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, and trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments and industry experts, this year’s league table provides great insight into the shifting balance of power in global higher education.

UKZN improved on their rankings from last year, moving from the 401-500 category to 351-400.

Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, UKZN’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, said these rankings are the outcome of the efforts and dedication of their staff and students to scholarly and scientific work, which reaffirms the university’s standing as an international research-intensive institution.

It was a significant milestone for DUT who were being featured in the the rankings for the first time in their history.

DUT was ranked in the 451-500 category.

Alan Khan, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at DUT, said: “We are extremely proud of our colleagues and students who worked so diligently and consistently to get us into the top five of all South African universities. Based on the rankings, DUT is also the number one University of Technology in the country. With our focus on implementing ENVISION 2030 and our DNA of being people-centred and engaged, innovative and entrepreneurial, we have a solid foundation to make this a decade of taking DUT to even greater levels of performance and excellence.”

DUT (5) and UKZN (4) also made the top five list in the South African rankings of universities.
