Tertiary institution invests R25million through new scholarship programme

The IIE’s Varsity College scholarship programme will be available from 2021 for 250 top performing new students each year.

THE IIE’s Varsity College launched a scholarship programme last week Wednesday whereby from 2021, 250 top performing new students each year, from around South Africa, will benefit from it.

The purpose of this R25 million investment is to provide an opportunity for prospective students, especially those who might otherwise not afford access to private higher education, to become the leaders and thinkers of the future.

Each academic scholarship will be for contact learning and will be for the full minimum duration of the qualification (3 to 4 years).

Managing director at The IIE’s Varsity College, Louise Wiseman said this new programme is unique and the largest of its kind in South Africa.

“While on our scholarship programme, we will ensure that the learners derive the most from our offering in terms of academic excellence, personal development and preparing them for their future careers,” said Wiseman.

The IIE’s Scholarship Programme will be available to 2021 first year undergraduate students, enrolling at a tertiary institution for the first time.

The programme allows for four categories of scholarships.

All scholarships have a merit requirement, and some have an income criterion and are reserved for applicants from less economically advantaged households.

  • Corporate Scholarships will be offered in partnership with national businesses and organisations and will be valued at a minimum of R50 000 per annum per student. These scholarships will be awarded to students who have achieved an average of 75 per cent in Grade 11 or Grade 12 (or equivalent) or achieved 80 per cent or more for four subjects (excluding life orientation). They include opportunities with partnering organisations such as access to mentorships, job shadowing and internships and will be available to students wanting to pursue studies in accounting, law, education, Information Technology and business.
  • Excellence Scholarships have the same qualifying criteria as Corporate Scholarships, but without access to mentorships, job shadowing and internships. These will be awarded across all IIE’s Varsity College campuses and programmes.
  • The Achiever Scholarship awards will be valued at an average of R30 000.00 per student per annum with a Grade 11 or Grade 12 average of a least 65 per cent (excluding Life Orientation) as a minimum qualifying standard and who form part of a household income less than R600 000 per year.
  • The Rising Stars which requires applicants to have achieved a Grade 11 or Grade 12 average of 60 per cent (excluding Life Orientation) or more and who form part of a household income of less than R400 000 per annum. These awards will be valued at up to R40 000 per student per year.

The Achiever and Rising Stars Scholarship categories are restricted to South African citizens.

Learners can now apply for The IIE’s Varsity College Scholarship Programme, applications close on 30 September 2020.

To find out more information and obtain the necessary forms, interested learners should contact an IIE Varsity College campus and speak to a student advisor.
