One suspect shot, arrested in Westville shootout

A second suspect fled the scene but Westville SAPS are investigating.

A MAN involved in an attempted hijacking and armed robbery was shot and arrested in Westville yesterday thanks to a Blue Security reaction officer and a quick-thinking member of the public.

“An unknown vehicle followed a courier company delivery van along Acacia Road in Westville at about 10.30am on Thursday, ” said Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios.

“An undisclosed number of suspects got out of their vehicle and pointed a firearm at the courier driver while the van was stationary,” Mathios said.

“Fortunately, a member of the public observed the incident and immediately notified Blue Security’s control centre and reaction officers raced to the scene.”

The units spotted the hijacking in progress and this led to a shootout between the suspects and the armed response officers.

One suspect was shot and injured in the leg, while a second suspect evaded arrest and escaped.

“The injured suspect was treated at the scene by paramedics and transported to hospital under armed guard. All items that had been removed from the van were recovered and accounted for,” he said.

Westville SAPS attended the scene and are investigating.
