Help empower youth via online talk

DR Dean Allen will interview Christo Brand on Zoom on Mandela Day, 18 July from 7.30pm to raise much-needed funds for the Youth Education and Support Trust.

Christo Brand is a former prison guard who was one of several who were responsible for guarding the late former president, Nelson Mandela. Christo went to Robben Island in 1978 when he was 19 years old. Mandela was already imprisoned when he arrived there.

In 1982 he was transferred along with Mandela to Pollsmoor Prison.

Christo and Mandela developed a firm friendship over the course of many years. Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend was published in 2014 and was co-authored by Christo.

He retired from Robben Island in 2018 to pursue his story telling of his experiences with Mandela.

“This will be a most interesting and touching story that is fitting for Mandela Day,” said the Youth Education and Support Trust’s chairman, Selwyn Comrie.

Proceeds from the virtual event will go to the Trust, a registered non-profit organisation that supports disadvantaged students at tertiary level.

Tickets cost R75 per viewing for individuals or families and can be booked via Quicket HERE.
