Duo aims to build animal shelter in Valley of 1000 Hills

Two animal lovers, Sifundo Manqele and Mandy Barrett are raising funds and looking for donations to build a rescue shelter in KwaNyuswa.

KWANYUSWA resident, Sifundo Manqele, is on a mission to build an animal rescue shelter in the Valley of 1000 Hills.

With hundreds of stranded dogs in the valley, Manqele, together with Cato Ridge resident, Mandy Barrett, created the idea to open a shelter.

Manqele is well-known for trying to uplift the community and lend a helping hand.

His dedication to assist has earned him a nomination in the Bavundulule Awards for the Community Builder Award category.

The 29-year-old, who started his NPO, Empathy for the Community, said he was already working as a dog trainer for Barrett before the lockdown.

“The lockdown has also affected dogs, who have homes, as their owners are struggling to provide for them.”

Manqele said they go door-to-door trying to help with food where they can.

“You can never save every life, or make everyone kind, but you can save one life and teach kindness to a few. Our mission is to uplift the spirit within communities. Saving lives, encouraging compassion and spreading love,” he said.

Manqele is currently looking after three dogs which were rescued during the lockdown.

The shelter they are planning to build within the community of KwaNyuswa, Valley of 1000 Hills will provide place of love, safety and learning for animals and people.

“We will be focussed on providing education on animals, caring for them and training them, fun activities, as well as offering employment to several people in the valley.

Barrett said she and Manqele have had a similar vision for a while now.
