While the KZN Department of Transport was not available for comment at the time of publication, drivers waiting to renew or pick up new licences reported that a RTI official had told them the centre was to be closed down immediately.

A Highway Mail Facebook live post last week showing people standing in a long queue for many hours outside the facility included the news that Rossburgh RTI was to be open over the weekends during July.

During the extended lockdown period, a backlog of renewals and customers seeking testing and even the collection of new licences and Public Driver Permits (PDPs) had developed.  The extra working days during July was supposed to alleviate this backlog.

A man, whose identity is known to the Highway Mail, had been in the queue and was hopeful as he got inside the centre and into one of the final holding areas, said he was bitterly disappointed.

At the time of publication the Highway Mail did not receive any official confirmation from the centre itself or the KZN Department of Transport.
