Malvern armed robbery suspect found in local hospital

A suspect, who sustained a gunshot wound, allegedly while trying to escape from the scene of a house robbery was tracked down by investigators and is under arrest in hospital.

A SUSPECT, wanted in connection with an alleged home invasion in Malvern on Monday afternoon, was arrested when police from the Ethekwini District Trio Task Team tracked him down in a hospital.

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Cpt Nqobile Gwala, said the man found in the hospital was one of three armed suspects believed to have entered a house in Glendale Drive, Malvern, just before 2pm on Monday, 29 June.

The suspects allegedly held up the occupants in the house.

“They pushed the victims to the floor and stole a flat screen TV from the wall. The suspects then jumped over the fence with the stolen flat screen TV.”

Gwala said that an off-duty police officer, who witnessed the incident, confronted the suspects and a shootout ensued.

“One of the suspects was injured and was taken away by his colleagues in their getaway vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle was later found abandoned on the Higginson Highway and was impounded by police for further investigation,” said Gwala.

Gwala added that the investigators, connected to the Ethekwini District Trio Task Team, continued with an investigation into the case of house robbery.

“Their investigations led them to a local hospital where a 26-year-old suspect was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen,” said Gwala.

“He was placed under arrest and remains at hospital under police guard. He will appear in court after he is discharged from hospital.”

As of Wednesday, July 1, the suspect was still under hospital guard recuperating from his injuries, according to Gwala.

Asked if police had been able to interview the suspect about the whereabouts of his accomplices in the alleged robbery, Gwala said she was not able to divulge any further information.
