Blissful Pinetown couple blessed with 60 years of marriage

Erwin and Thelma Blomeyer celebrated their diamond anniversary.

ERWIN and Thelma Blomeyer celebrated their diamond anniversary on 25 June 2020.

Erwin Blomeyer and Thelma Oosthuizen met as children in Greytown.

Erwin loved building intricate road systems for his toy cars, and Thelma enjoyed “playing” cars with him.

Their friendship was put on hold when Thelma moved to Durban to complete her schooling.

Thelma studied nursing, a career choice perfectly suited for her caring personality and passion for people.

Erwin’s curious nature and love for figuring out how things work led him to train as an electrician after he completed his schooling in Wartberg.

Fortuitously, Erwin moved to Durban to pursue his career as an electrician.

His mother had suggested he make contact with the Oosthuizens which he did by visiting Thelma at the Umbogintwini Hospital where she worked as a nurse.

Their renewed friendship blossomed into romance and Erwin and Thelma were married on 25 June 1960 at Manning Road Methodist Church.

As newlyweds, Erwin and Thelma lived in Tongaat where Erwin worked and they welcomed their first child, Karen, in April 1961.

Following a move to a flat near Ridge Road in Durban, Ingrid was born in January of 1964.Later that same year, Erwin and Thelma bought their first house in Sanctuary Place, Queensburgh.

A fitting street name, the house would serve as a sanctuary for the Blomeyer family and their descendants for the next 50 years.

In this home, Erwin and Thelma welcomed their next three children: Heidi, Liesl and Erwin Jr and many happy memories were made.

Erwin and Thelma quickly became pillars of the community and everyone in Sanctuary Place knew that if they needed anything at any time of the day or night, Erwin and Thelma would be more than happy to help them.

In 2015, they moved to Pinehaven Lodge, where they still live today. Now in their 80s, they are both still active and healthy, with Erwin serving as Pinehaven Lodge’s estate manager.

They continue to be a support structure within their community and are always ready to lend a helping hand.

Erwin is always available to fix almost anything and Thelma provides medical care, advice and support. An important part of their life has always been their involvement in their church, first Christ Church in Pinetown and more recently, Pinetown Methodist Church.

Erwin and Thelma have nine grandchildren who live throughout South Africa, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. They have played an important role in the upbringing of all their grandchildren and are well respected and loved for that.

Despite global lockdowns, the whole family was able to connect via a Zoom call recently and Thelma was delighted and emotional to see and connect with everyone, saying to Erwin: “I can’t believe we created all of these people.”
