According to reports, the man was carrying an undisclosed amount of money when he was attacked outside a bank in New Germany.

Witnesses said the man surrendered when he was attacked and the suspects fled with the money.

“I really do not understand why they had to shoot him. I am scared; a person can just be robbed and shot when there are so many people around,” said a witness, who wished to remain anonymous.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, said the man was stabilised on scene by Rescue Care Paramedics, who also called the helicopter.

“He is in a serious condition. He sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen,” said Herbst.

“The men fled in red GTI.”
