Kloof High welcomes new principal
Rob Holding has taught at Kloof High School for 33 years and was recently appointed as the local school's principal.
EQUIPPED with a wealth of knowledge and experience, Rob Holding, has taken on the role of principal at Kloof High School.
He studied at the University of Natal (now UKZN), achieved combined Honours in History and Political Studies, and followed this up with an MA in Political Studies and his HDE.
This is currently his 33rd year at the Kloof-based high school and is his 34th year in the teaching profession. He has served as departmental head, subject head of history and, from 1998, deputy principal.
“I prefer the notion of ‘head teacher’ and view myself as ‘first among equals’. I feel honoured and privileged to assume the role of principal of a truly South African school, and a highly successful one at that,” said Rob.
If he were not a teacher, Rob believes he would have taken up a career as a writer or journalist or even, perhaps, a lawyer.

“I will continue to teach history, which is my passion. I have had so many memorable moments in what has been far more than just a job to me. I have always believed in taking history out of the classroom and conducted many, many, local and overseas tours over the years including seven to Europe. History is brought to life in ways which are impossible in the classroom,” he said.
He even chose to celebrate his 40th birthday on one such trip with a glass of champagne (non-alcoholic, of course) at the top of Isandlwana.
“We will continue to build the family ethos of Kloof High, which must be a safe space for all; one in which the identity and human dignity of each learner is respected. The quest for academic and sporting excellence will continue and we would wish to be at the forefront of the e-learning revolution. A major goal is to strengthen links with the Kloof and Upper Highway community,” said a determined Rob.
In his spare time he reads and writes and thoroughly enjoys long road trips with family and friends. He also enjoys escaping to the Berg and the bush. Rob also loves the ‘big sky’ country of the Free State and the Karoo as well as foreign travel, especially Europe.
