DUE to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 Comrades Marathon was cancelled this year.

The event organisers gave its supporters the chance to sign up to compete in the Race The Comrades Legends, a virtual Comrades race for all.

The race options available for entrants included a 5km, 10km, 21.1km, 45km, and 90km and could be completed on the course of their choice.

The Pinetown and District Athletic Club’s (PDAC) Brenda McCann, said, “The PDAC athletes who love and cherish this event jumped at the opportunity to still be able to participate in this momentous event. Two of the club’s athletes, of whom we are incredibly proud, completed the full 90kms, Jade Redman and Krysten Smithers (who ran her 90kms up in Pretoria).”

“Other PDAC athletes also took part in various distances and it was amazing to see the black and gold colours along the Comrades route and even up in the central Drakensberg,” said Brenda.

The local club’s committee has also assisted its members in need during the lockdown with much-appreciated food parcels. They also recently acquired PDAC branded buffs that are available for their members to purchase to use or to be given as a fun gift to a friend, colleague or fellow runner.

“The buffs are not sold to make a profit, however, more to offer everyone the opportunity to have a mask during these unprecedented times we find ourselves in. Well done again to all the Highway runners who participated in the Race The Comrades Legends on Sunday. It is awesome to be part of such a great community,” said Brenda.

To purchase a buff, contact the club’s secretary on 061 069 7384.

Kearsney Striders Running Club

MEMBERS from the Kearsney Striders Running Club were eager to join more than 40 000 runners from across 103 participating nations in the Race The Comrades Legends virtual event on Sunday, 14 June.
