Durban’s Aline (93) walks to raise funds

Through her effort, the Durban granny was able to raise enough money to help feed 800 people for two weeks.

IN a bid to help those in need, 93-year-old Aline Wright vowed to walk at least 1km per day for five days to help raise funds for Making A Difference (MAD).

Aline, or Granny Mopes as she is more affectionately known, lives in Durban North but has been staying at Rosehill Stables in Summerveld with her two daughters, Heather Partner and Sarah Kennedy, during the lockdown.

Heather launched MAD to help educate staff on safety, security, health and community in a kind environment.

She then added in a self-defence course for the 26 members.

Since the nationwide lockdown, Heather launched food collection for humans and animals and the project has continued to grow each week.

“There are about 2 000 people and lots of dogs. The count changes as we hand out parcels daily,” she said.

The sisters have been making donations to those in need in Summerveld for six weeks.

Unable to support the project financially, Aline decided to launch a fund-raiser and set a goal to complete a 5km sponsored walk.

She aimed to notch 1km under her belt each day for five days. Wearing a Fitbit, she carefully measured out a 1km track each day.

“I have never felt better!” beamed the 93-year-old.

She began her rounds at Rosehill Stables last Wednesday and finished the sponsored walk on Sunday. With no time limit, and so much to see and do, it is understandable that Aline would be enticed by small distractions such as smelling the roses or stopping by the stables to give each of the horses a pat.

Her friends from Durban North provided the last bit of funds needed to make her target.

The money she raised will help fund the purchase of food parcels that will feed 800 people for two weeks.
