Pinetown NGOs care for the homeless

Volunteers from El Gibbor, Highway Christian Church and Pinetown Street Ministries with help from various sponsors have made a huge effort to provide the homeless with breakfast, lunch and supper every day.

Donna Walker from the Highway Community Church said they were very worried about what was going to happen to the homeless after the president’s three-week lockdown announcement.

Volunteers from these NGOs have made a huge effort to provide the homeless with breakfast, lunch and supper every day.

“A big thank you goes out to our sponsors: Sunshine Bread, Knowles Spar, Tekweni Foods, MNR Chemicals, HCC Church and the community for their help and generous contributions,” said Walker.

She told the Highway Mail that the donations have been amazing. The dedicated volunteers leave the safety of their homes and meet at the Highway Christian Community Church each morning to prepare food for the homeless and drop it off at Lahee Park.

“We have even been able to send food to other needy families and organisations in Pinetown and surrounding areas along with feeding 120 homeless,” said Walker.

The homeless get fed sandwiches and one hot meal a day.

“The meals we serve them differs, depending on what we have. People have been so generous but I think we need a donation of vegetables to mix with the soups,” she said.

The NGOs said they are hoping to turn this temporary housing situation into a home.

“There is no entertainment there. We need chess games, draughts, card games and any board games or drawing aids that will keep them from being bored.

People who wish to contribute, can drop off their donations at HCC 10 Harvey Road, Pinetown.

“Please feel free to contribute, no contribution is too small. We can pick up from you or you can drop items off,” said Walker.
