Browns’ School chess tournament ignites young minds

64 players from both the high school and primary school sections participated in the tournament.

THE Browns’ School was excited to host The KZN LSEN Chess Championships 2020 on Thursday, 12 March.

Open Air School, The Khulangolwazi School and Mason Lincoln schools responded to the invitation.

The school was overwhelmed by the response and interest in chess as 64 players from both the high school and primary school sections participated in the tournament.

The top three players in the primary school section were from The Browns’ School: Tristan D’ Argent, Ethan Bailie and Jadon Grobbelaar.

Ethan Bailie said, “My mum was so excited when I went home with my trophy and chess set. We phoned my grandpa because I always get beaten by him,” said a happy Ethan.

In the high school section, Alwande Khuzwayo (Open Air School), Kwanele Mncwabe (Mason Lincoln School) and Mnqobi Kunene (KhulongolwaziSchool) dominated the top positions.

Chess coordinator and coach, Kanthi Sarjoo, said The Browns’ School is grateful to Pick n Pay for its generous sponsorship of trophies, chess sets and spot prizes.

The participants were treated to goodie bags also provided by Pick n Pay.
