Bike thrill for Westville centenarian

Providence Rest Home resident, Cecilie Young turned 104 on Wednesday, 11 March. To celebrate this milestone, Sister Kym Le Roux organised a special cruise for her on a bike to celebrate Cecilie's special day.

YOU have to keep fit to reach 104 years, said Cecilie Young who celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, 11 March with a spin around the block on a motorcycle.

“I have never been a drinker or smoker and played lots of sports especially tennis. I was a tennis singles champion in Zululand for three years,” said the proud Cecilie who grew up in Kranskop and has outlived her six siblings.

“I have lived such a happy and free life. I grew up in a very peaceful area where we planted our own vegetables, rode horses and swam in dams. It was such a wonderful feeling and we never feared anything,” she said.

Sister Kym Le Roux organised a special motorbike ride for Cecilie Young to celebrate her 104th birthday.

She later got married to a wonderful man whose first wife had passed away. Young does not have children of her own but has three stepchildren she regards her own, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

On her birthday, matron of the Providence Rest Home in Westville, Sister Kym Le Roux, took Cecilie on a short bike ride.

“Our matron belongs to a biking club and I once asked her what it was like to ride a bike. One day she took me for a short ride and it was so exciting,” said Cecilie. To make her birthday a special one, Sister Le Roux organised a special cruise for Cecilie. After the bike ride, friends and family gathered at the home’s beautifully decorated dinning room to celebrate’s this milestone.

“You are never too old to try new things,” said Cecilie who was thrilled after an exciting ride.

For a 104-year-old, Cecilie looks good for her age and is loved at the home, according to Sister Le Roux. She is also fluent in IsiZulu and Afrikaans and has all her wits about her.
